Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting
Three different jobs that get used interchangeably — cleaning removes soil, sanitizing reduces bacteria to a safe level, and disinfecting kills a specified list of pathogens on an already-clean surface.
Detailed definition
These three words get used as if they were intensity settings on the same dial. They are not. They are three distinct jobs, and the order you do them in matters more than most people expect.
Cleaning
Cleaning is the physical removal of soil — dust, crumbs, grease, fingerprints, general grime — usually with a detergent and some form of agitation. It is not primarily about killing anything. It is about getting the material off the surface.
This is the step people skip when they are in a hurry, and skipping it is why the other two steps underperform.
Sanitizing
Sanitizing reduces the number of bacteria on a surface to a level considered safe for its use. It is a reduction, not an elimination, and the benchmark differs by context — food-contact surfaces in a kitchen are held to a different standard than a desk.
Disinfecting
Disinfecting uses a product designed to kill a specific, listed set of pathogens. The critical detail is that disinfectants are tested and labeled for use on clean surfaces. Soil physically shields microorganisms from the product and can chemically neutralize it outright. Spraying disinfectant onto a visibly dirty surface is largely wasted effort.
That is why the real sequence is clean first, then disinfect. Two steps, in that order.
Why this matters for your space
For a daycare, a medical waiting room, or an office restroom, the distinction is operational rather than academic. A recurring visit is mostly cleaning, with sanitizing or disinfecting applied where it earns its place — high-touch points, restrooms, food-prep areas — rather than fogged indiscriminately across every surface.
If your space has a specific standard it needs to meet, tell us during the walkthrough and we will scope to it rather than guess.
