Pure-Water Window Cleaning

Cleaning glass with purified water instead of soap or detergent, so the water dries clear on its own — no residue, no drying, no squeegee pass required.

Detailed definition

Pure-water window cleaning uses purified water — almost always reverse osmosis water — as the entire cleaning solution. No soap, no detergent, no chemical added to the water at all. A soft brush agitates the glass while the water flows over it, and the glass is left to air dry.

Why no soap or detergent

Soap and detergent work by suspending dirt so it can be rinsed or wiped away, but they leave their own residue behind unless every trace of the solution is removed from the glass before it dries. That is the entire reason conventional window cleaning depends on a squeegee: something has to physically pull the soapy water off before it dries in place.

Purified water skips that problem at the source. With essentially nothing dissolved in it, there is no soap film to leave behind and no mineral residue either, because the minerals were stripped out in treatment. The water is doing the cleaning without leaving anything for a squeegee to have to remove.

What soap residue actually causes

Streaking on window glass is usually blamed on technique, but the more common cause is chemistry: a thin film of soap or detergent left on the glass that dries unevenly and catches light. It is also part of why glass re-soils faster after a soapy clean — residue on the surface gives new dust and grime something to stick to. Pure water leaves nothing on the glass for either problem to start from.

What “no drying, no squeegee marks” means in practice

Because the water carries no dissolved solids, it does not need to be pulled off before it dries — it can be left to air dry and will dry completely clear, the same way distilled water dries with no ring. That is what removes squeegee work from the process on exterior glass reached by a water-fed pole: there is nothing to squeegee off, because there is nothing left behind to leave a mark.

Where the method’s limits are

Pure-water cleaning is a method for cleaning glass and frames — it removes what is sitting on the surface. It is not a fix for glass that is already damaged. Scratches are physical and stay physical regardless of what the water is treated with, and hard water spotting that has progressed to actual etching in the pane is glass damage, not surface soil — no cleaning method restores glass once mineral deposits have worked into it. The honest use of pure water is prevention and routine cleaning, not repair.

For interior glass, a squeegee-and-solution approach is usually still the right tool; pure water is primarily an exterior-access method, which is where a water-fed pole delivers it to the glass in the first place.
